WHAT IS IT LIKE TO SERVICE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS?
Servicing fire extinguishers is a simple task. Most manufactures use the same simple valve design of a spring loaded valve. There are three service cycles for hand portable fire extinguishers. The first five years you do a simple inspection and then tag the fire extinguisher to certify that it is functional. The sixth year you take the fire extinguisher completely apart, replace the soft components, recharge the fire extinguisher and then put a certification tag on the serviced fire extinguisher. Every twelve years the fire extinguisher shell has to be filled with water and then pressure tested. This is in addition to the six year rebuilding of the fire extinguisher.
